Each year, we recognize individuals during Taste of Carroll presented by M&T Bank, our signature fundraising event, who are truly exceptional and have extended themselves beyond expectations to show compassion and love. Nominated by their peers, five team members and one community member are chosen as Hospice Heroes.

Meet the 2021 Hospice Heroes:

Malika Acker, Hospice Aide

Malika Acker is known for her outstanding work as a health aide on the facility-based team. She is loved by our team, patients, families and facility partners.

During this challenging year, Malika has remained positive and radiates love and joy to all.

She goes the extra mile remembering patients’ birthdays; she even paid for a patient’s haircut with her own money.

Mark Blacksten, Community Hospice HeroMark Blacksten, Community Hospice Hero

Mark Blacksten serves on the Carroll Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and on several committees. He is also the past chair of the Carroll Hospice Board of Trustees. Blacksten is the Administrative Vice President, Business Banking Regional Manager of M&T Bank, and he has been successful in advocating for charitable donations in support of Carroll Hospice for many years.

Thanks to Mark, M&T Bank is once again the Presenting Sponsor for our Taste of Carroll event. “Until I went through that process as a family member of someone who was going through hospice, I didn’t realize the level of care and kindness that the staff, the volunteers and the hospice family really provided,” explains Mark. “For the family and for the patient, it’s a very challenging, difficult and emotional time, and the team goes above and beyond with compassion, respect and dignity.”

Most recently, Mark chaired the Dove House expansion committee, which concluded with resounding success, raising $4.3 million toward the $3.5 million goal.

Melissa Bonbrest, Hospice Aide
Melissa Bonbrest, Hospice Aide

Melissa Bonbrest is an exceptional aide at Dove House. She gives her heart to every patient and family, taking time to be with them and provide emotional support. She is knowledgeable, dependable and compassionate. She consistently goes above and beyond her aide patient care duties in so many ways. You will never see her sitting still (unless she’s documenting!).

Melissa does our supply ordering and spends a great deal of her night shift making sure all those supplies, as well as our laundry, are fully restocked and organized, including supplies in the nurses’ med room.

On top of all that, she is always cheerful and upbeat!

Betty is an integral part of our grief services, and her skills and service help to keep the department running smoothly. She is always pleasant, cheerful and approachable.

From the moment Betty began her position, she has consistently been a hardworking team player.

Kelly Yudt consistently goes above and beyond for her patients and families. She does not hesitate to drop what she’s doing to help a patient or family who needs support or to support a coworker. She is always ready to provide a listening ear and collaboration with her team.

Although Kelly typically works three days a week, she leaves a thorough report for her coworkers and she’s outstanding at anticipating issues before they bubble up. She always displays kindness and compassion.

She brings her best self to work, no matter what is happening in the world around us.

Thank you to all of our Hospice Heroes who do so much for our patients every day!
